RugbyTown 7s returns to action after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ninth edition of the world class tournament is shaping up to be the best on yet.

The absence of the 2019 edition of the tournament is just the latest chapter in the long, winding history of one of the premier rugby sevens tournaments in the United States.

The tournament began in 2012 and was a spin-off of a fifteens tournament that was already being played by the five branches of the United States Armed Forces. This tournament was played on a military base, so it was closed to the public. That was until Gary Helfeldt, a member of Air Force Rugby, pitched the idea to Glendale’s current City Manager Linda Cassady.

Since 2011, Glendale’s RugbyTown 7s tournament has attracted top rugby competition from around the planet. Not only do top domestic and international clubs bring their best talent to RugbyTown USA in August each year in the fast-paced sevens rugby action.
